Post-Katrina
Newsletter

Dear Alumni, Colleagues and Friends, As
we planned our departmental newsletter it became clear that, after all
that has
happened to us at Tulane it would simply not do to have the newsletter
in its
usual format. The experiences of members of the department in the
aftermath of
Hurricane Katrina, on the other hand were so diverse that we could not
hope to
capture anything more than a small glimpse of what we went through in a
conventional format. So we decided to ask Ross Hallen, Michelle Lacey's
husband, to make a QuickTime video (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html)
describing a little of what went on
during
the storm, but one that also focuses on the future. We asked some
faculty,
undergraduates and graduate students to describe their perspectives on the department after Katrina. We
hope that after watching the videos
you will
come away with the sense
that the
members of the department went through a difficult experience but have
come
away with new energy and enthusiasm for continuation and renewal of our
programs. Members
of the mathematical community, in the aftermath of Katrina, behaved the
way
that I would have hoped that the larger society would have. They took
the time
to understand our real needs and responded in extremely helpful ways.
As we go
through the process of renewal, we still have needs and I am confident
that the
mathematical community will respond as well as before. Our needs, it
seems to
me, are simple. We need to get beyond the misinformation in the popular
press
and to have people realize that we
are once again a functioning department, with high level research and a
great
program for training undergraduates and graduate students in
mathematics. We
encourage you to visit and see the exciting things going on here.
