This is the retired class webpage for APMA 1650 Spring 2020. It is no longer being maintained. Please see my teaching page for up-to-date course webpages.
The class has transitioned to a remote learning format. As a consequence, many of the features of the course have changed. However, many things will also stay the same. If you have questions, the fastest way to get an answer is through the Piazza page on Canvas.
See the updated syllabus for a comprehensive outline of new course policies.
Brief SummaryThere will be no live (synchronous) lectures. In addition to recommended readings from the book, recorded video lectures will be released weekly along with notes as needed. Reading and viewing of this material will be required.
Weekly canvas quizzes will be given to test for reading comprehension.
Piazza will be used to field most questions and hold discussions. If you have a question about course content or structure, the quickest way to get an answer will be Piazza (available through the Canvas page). Public questions are anonymous to other students but not the instructors. Private messages can also be sent to instructors.
Homework will be collected through Gradescope. It will still be assigned weekly and due by 11:59PM EST on the due date, but will be submitted through Gradescope by scanning (or photographing) and uploading the pages for each problem. Regrade requests can be made through Gradescope. See this video for instructions. See the syllabus for more details.
Exams will be open-note and administered through Gradescope. The exams will be timed (from when you start) and be made available to start over a 24hr period. Solutions to individual problems will have to be scanned and uploaded to Gradescope while taking the exam. Many of these features are brand-new in Gradescope and may require some more testing. I will create a practice exam on Gradescope (with real practice problems) for people to practice with before the real thing. At the moment SEAS accomodations should be accounted for in the exam time.
Office Hours will be held weekly via Zoom according to the Google Calendar (you will need a password to use the links in the calendar). Meetings will be a mix of "waiting room" style where TAs can see students one-by-one and "group style" where the TAs can address larger groups. The exact format will be in flux as we figure out the best way to effectively manage various volumes of students.
Recitations will be replaced with weekly problem/solution sets. Each week, a set of problems and solutions will be released along with recorded explanations of problems being worked out. Courtesy of Mona Khoshnevis.
The follow calendar lists all office hours and location held by the course TAs. They are subject to change depending of the availability of the TAs. Please check back here regularly for the latest schedule.
You can also add the calendar to your Google calendar.
